GrayOnline E-mail Configuration

NOTICE!

The mail system supports both unencrypted and encrypted mail. However, since all modern mail clients support encrypted mail, I have deprecated support for unencrypted mail.

When you use the encrypted setup, you may get a warning saying the server certificate can't be verified. This is expected; I refuse to pay the extortion (fee) that Thawte/Verisign and their competitors charge for "verified" certificates. After you tell your mail client that it should use my certificate, you should be all set for that session. The traffic will be just as well encrypted as if I'd spend many (many) dollars on a "verified" certificate.

Incoming Mail Setup

Encrypted Setup (safe)

Server Type: POP3 or IMAP. If you want to leave your mail on the server, use IMAP but pay attention to your quota!
Server Name: mail.gray.net.au or box573.bluehost.com (supports both POP3 and IMAP)
Port Number: POP3: 995 (with SSL see below)
IMAP: 993 (with SSL see below)
SSL: YES (note - this may be on an "Advanced" tab and is not the same as Microsoft's "Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" in their Outlook and Outlook Express mail clients!)
User Name: your_email+gray.net.au Note: You can still use the "your_email@grayonline.id.au" form of your address but not not for logging into the mail server!
Basically, this is just your e-mail address with a "+" instead of an "@" in it.
Password: Yeh, right - call me!

Outgoing Mail Setup

Encrypted By Default (safe)

Server Type: SMTP
Server Name: mail.gray.net.au or box573.bluehost.com
Port Number: 465 (some ISP's block this - Telstra and Internode, I'm looking at you!!)
If you have problems with the standard port, 465 you will need to use your ISP's mail server for sending mail - sorry :(
SSL: YES - with port 465 (note - see comments above for incoming mail server SSL configuration.)
SMTP Authentication: YES
User Name: Same as you incomming mail setup.
Password: Same as you incomming mail setup.

Webmail

Log into the following URL with the username and password as detailed above:
https://gray.net.au:2096/

NOTICE - if you get a warning about a certificate mis-match, just add an exception, or whatever your browser wants to get past it. Until I make enough money to laugh about the cost of SSL certificates, I'll just piggy-back on the hosting provider's certificate. If you'd rather not see the warning, use the following alternate URL:
https://box573.bluehost.com:2096
